Indian Coins and Numismatics

The history of Indian Coins dates backs to 600 BC. At that time Mahajanpadas(Provinces) came into existance and Silver Punch Marked Coins known as Kasharpana circulated. In later years very powerful dynasties gained control and start building their empires. Some of these dynasties are Nanda ,Mauryans and Sungas. During the rule of Great Mauryan King Ashoka, India was united under his central rule. His kingdom expands from present day Afganistan to Nort Eastern Extents of Himalya and Southern Extents.  Mauryan rulers circulated many types of Silver and Copper Punch Marked Coins. In later centuries many new empires and dynasties appeared, some of them are Satavahanas,Kunindas,Pandyas, Indo-Greeks, Indo-Sassnians,Guptas,Rajputs etc.

In around 7th Century, whole Indian subcontinent came under repeated attacks of Arabs,Turks etc. In consequent years they gained significant power to rule India. They were known as Sultans, they establishedDelhi Sultanate and soon they gained control over various parts of India. Sultans were defeated byMughals, the decendents of Taimur.

After nearly 300 years of ruleMughal Empire gets weaker and Marathas emerged as a significant power. At that time Portuguese, British and French also started gaining control over significant ports, but Britishers proves themselves much powerful than others. During this time weak Mughal Emperor was a titular central authority but India was divided in Several Princely States.
